The deterioration of tyres is usually gradual and hard to notice when you drive your vehicle daily. Therefore, it is important that you have your tyres checked regularly for wear and tear and any damage that they may have incurred. Worn tyres can increase stopping distances and reduce the handling and gripping of the tyres to the road. Damaged tyres can be particularly dangerous as they can unpredictably perish or cause a 'blow-out'.
It is also important to keep your tyres correctly inflated. Under or over inflation can cause your tyres to wear unevenly, meaning that you may have to replace them sooner than you anticipate. Wrongly inflated tyres can also result in higher fuel consumption. Misaligned tyres may also cause uneven wear.
It is a legal requirement by law that all vehicles are fitted with the correct size and type of tyre for the type of vehicle that you are driving and the purpose for which it is being used. It is also a legal requirement that the minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. It is recommended that you replace your tyres before they reach this depth.
If you do not adhere to UK Tyre Laws you may be given three points on your licence and a fine (per tyre). Therefore, if you have four illegal tyres on your vehicle you could receive 12 points - resulting in losing your licence.
